Nation observes Good Friday
New Delhi/Chennai, Apr 6:Christians thronged churches across India today to observe Good Friday, the day commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
In Delhi, devotees thronged the Sacred Heart Cathedral as special services were conducted with priests urging them to imbibe the spirit of forgiveness preached by Jesus Christ."On this day, the followers of Christ assemble in churches. They follow the way of the cross, pray the mysteries of the cross and pray to their saviour Jesus Christ because they know that Jesus suffered and shared the sufferings of humanity," said Father Babu Joseph, spokesperson of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India.Abraham, a devotee, said Good Friday stood for the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus Christ for humanity."It's a day for every Christian. We call it Good Friday because this is the day when God gave up himself for others," he said.
In Chennai, devotees thronged the Shrine of Divine Mercy Church to observe the day."This is the day we recollect the passion, the death of Jesus Christ. For those of us who don't know Christ, this is a reminder of the day when Jesus was tried, persecuted and killed nearly 2000 years before," said Martha, a devotee.Good Friday is the Friday before Easter.
During the whole week preceding Easter, there were lengthy canonical prayers at churches with readings from the Gospels, Epistles and the Old Testament.
